Cemented Carbide Mirror-Finished Plate

What is a cemented carbide mirror-finished plate?

As the name suggests, a cemented carbide mirror-finished plate is a flat or specially shaped component made from a cemented carbide matrix (typically tungsten carbide, WC) that undergoes a series of precision grinding and polishing processes to achieve an extremely low surface roughness and exceptionally high surface finish.

Key Features:

Extremely low surface roughness (Ra value): Typically, Ra ≤ 0.01 μm is required, and high-end products can even achieve Ra 0.002 μm or lower. By comparison, the diameter of a human hair is approximately 50–70 μm.

Mirror-like surface finish: Capable of clearly reflecting an object’s image without distortion.

Retains the inherent superior properties of cemented carbide: high hardness, high wear resistance, high compressive strength, corrosion resistance, and stable chemical properties.

II. Why is such a high level of surface finish required?

Achieving a “mirror-like” finish is not merely for aesthetic purposes, but also to fulfill critical functional requirements:

Reduced friction and adhesion:

An extremely smooth surface significantly reduces the coefficient of friction and frictional force when in contact with other materials.

In the processing and rolling of materials such as plastics and films, it effectively prevents materials from adhering to molds or rollers, ensuring smooth demolding.

Achieving Perfect Demolding:

This is one of the most critical applications of mirror-finished plates. In industries such as plastic injection molding, die casting, and glass forming, the surface of molds or inserts must be extremely smooth to ensure products release smoothly, while also achieving a high-gloss or even mirror-like finish on the product surface itself, eliminating the need for secondary processing.

Enhancing Corrosion Resistance:

Rough surfaces are more prone to accumulating corrosive agents, leading to pitting corrosion. Mirror-grade surface finish eliminates these microscopic “hiding places,” leaving no surface for corrosive agents to adhere to, thereby significantly enhancing resistance to corrosion and chemical erosion.

Ensuring Sealing Performance:

In high-end mechanical seals, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems, when used as sealing rings or valve seats, mirror-like surfaces can form an extremely precise fit with mating materials, achieving a near-zero-leakage seal.

Reducing Particle Contamination:

In industries such as semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, and food processing, rough surfaces can shed microscopic particles due to friction or easily trap contaminants. Mirror-finished surfaces are smooth and dense, greatly reducing particle generation and adhesion, thereby meeting cleanliness requirements.

As a Precision Measurement Standard:

Used in high-precision measuring instruments, platforms, and gauge blocks, their stable physical properties and smooth surfaces ensure measurement accuracy and repeatability.
