How to Choose the Right Tungsten Carbide Tips for Carbide Burrs
1. Choose by Workpiece Material (Most Important)
Ferrous metals (steel, stainless steel, cast iron, hardened steel)
- Use standard tungsten carbide (WC‑Co)
- For stainless steel & hard steel: prefer fine‑grain carbide for longer life
- Avoid ultra‑soft grades — they chip easily
Tungsten Carbide Inserts for Non‑ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, brass)
- Use carbide tips with open flute geometry (anti‑clogging)
- Can use standard carbide; just match the cut pattern (see below)
Wood, plastic, fiberglass
- Standard carbide works
- Prefer sharp, less aggressive flutes to avoid grabbing

2. Choose by Cut / Flute Pattern
Single cut (one-direction flute)
- Aggressive material removal
- For steel, iron, heavy deburring
- Longer chips, better for roughing
Double cut (cross-cut flutes)
- Smoother finish, less vibration
- Best for stainless steel, general metalworking
- Most universal choice
Aluminum cut / Non-ferrous cut
- Wide, deep flutes to prevent chip welding
- Specifically for aluminum, soft alloys
3. Choose Carbide Grain & Grade
Fine grain carbide
- Harder, sharper edge, better finish
- Longer tool life
- Ideal for precision, stainless, hard steel
Coarse / medium grain carbide
- Tougher, more impact-resistant
- For heavy roughing, cast iron, occasional use
- Lower cost
Typical cobalt content
- 6% Co: hard, wear-resistant (most common)
- 8–12% Co: tougher, for heavy impact / milling
4. Choose Tungsten Carbide Tip Shape for Your Job
- Ball shape: concave surfaces, radii, deburring
- Cylinder (flat end): face cutting, slots, weld removal
- Flame shape: deep profiling, mold work
- Tree shape: fast stock removal on curves
- Cone / pointed: narrow grooves, chamfers, small areas
5. Quick Selection Cheat Sheet
| Application | Best Carbide Tip Choice |
|---|---|
| Stainless steel finishing | Fine grain + double cut |
| Steel / iron heavy removal | Medium grain + single cut |
| Aluminum | Any carbide + aluminum-cut flutes |
| Precision mold/die work | Fine grain + sharp small burr |
| General DIY / maintenance | Double cut, medium grain, universal shape |
If you tell me what material you’re cutting and what you’re using it for (deburring, welding, carving, etc.), I can give you the exact best tip specification.
