What is a tungsten carbide blade for gear cutting?

A straight blade is a rectangular or wedge-shaped cutting insert. Made from tungsten carbide , a very hard and wear-resistant material (typically a compound of tungsten and carbon, sometimes with cobalt as a binder).

It’s called a "straight blade" because it’s a long, narrow "bar," rather than a circular or indexable insert. These blades are mounted in holders or cutting heads, which are then used in gear-cutting machines.

The blades of tungsten carbide are commonly used in:

Gear profiling machines.

Gear milling (using indexable-blade cutters).

Flattened or grooved gears.

Brocade of internal gears or ridges.

The edge of the blade forms the profile of the gear tooth. When mounted on a cutting head or a shaping tool, it performs the following functions:

Cut the flank faces of the gear teeth according to the required geometry (involute, straight, or helical).

It maintains dimensional accuracy over many cycles thanks to the hardness and wear resistance of tungsten carbide.

It can be resharpened multiple times on a tool sharpener.
